The story
In 2017 Ford changed the transmission cooling system and wrecked the transmission.
The factory cooling system on 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke trucks does not work for daily driving; here’s why. In 2011-2015 Ford operated the transmission cooling system off of the emissions side (secondary cooling), and temperatures are frequently noted as low as 130°-170°F.
In 2017 Ford switched the transmission cooling to engine side, which starts cooling at 200°F! Transmission temperatures are reported as high as 250°F+.
Why it matters
In heavy towing, hot weather, or added power quickly pushes transmission fluid temperatures into the danger zone. Excessive heat breaks down fluid, causes slipping, and shortens the life of your transmission — especially on tuned or heavily loaded Super Duty trucks.
